Enjoy Mexican Food and Watching Sports in Shibuya

A bar where you can show wholehearted support for your favorite team

The Shibuya Station area is undergoing a redevelopment said to happen only once in a hundred years. On these bustling streets of Shibuya, long known as a hub for young people, Fields Shibuya has been a popular sports bar for more than 20 years. The bar is a three-minute walk from the West Gate of JR Shibuya Station. It is located on the second floor of a building directly across from the new hotspot, Shibuya Sakura Stage.

The bright, glass-walled interior features a pop aesthetic that evokes nostalgic American charm, complete with a jukebox. This is accented by Mexico-inspired motifs, including green, white, and red coloring and decorative skulls. “I opened this place with the same feeling that people have when supporting young people coming to the US from Mexico in pursuit of the American Dream,” says 71-year-old owner Mamoru Tanaka. On days with high-profile sports events, he makes a point to wear a t-shirt or jersey specific to that sport as a show of “wholehearted support”. In this way, the bar reflects the owner’s desire to cheer on the athletes striving to be the best at their sport, the spectators watching them play, and everyone working hard day-in and day-out in the great metropolis of Tokyo.

A great way to learn about various sports

There are four monitors located throughout the bar, including one massive screen measuring more than 100 inches, showing a wide range of sports, including Major League Baseball, soccer, rugby, and American football. On days when big games, such as national team matches, are held, the bar is packed with customers watching the live broadcasts. For the final game of the MLB World Series, which was electrified by Shohei Ohtani’s performance, the bar opened early in the morning to coincide with the game’s start time. The bar is popular not only with Japanese customers, but also with visitors from overseas, and the atmosphere created when everyone comes together in such an exciting way has even drawn the attention of news programs from other countries.

On the day I visited, there was a live broadcast of a major boxing match, and the place was packed with boxing fans glued to the action on the screens. Regulars all agree that not only can they focus on the game with other like-minded fans and cheer their hearts out without reservation, but they also have opportunities to learn about sports they may not usually watch. On some days, there may be different sports shown on each monitor, so be sure to check out whichever interests you.

A chance to try rare tequilas

Some good food and drinks can make watching sports even more fun. In addition to Mexican dishes such as taco rice and guacamole, the menu features izakaya standards such as edamame and karaage fried chicken, to pair perfectly with your drink. But above all, the highlight of the menu at Fields Shibuya is its selection of tequilas. There are also several varieties of tequila made from 100% blue agave, each in a skull-shaped bottle, a reference to the traditional Mexican event “Day of the Dead”.

And if you share some mezcal in authentic Mexican style, it can feel like you’re right there in Mexico. There are more than 30 types of tequila and mezcal to choose from, as well as a variety of beers from Mexico and other countries around the world. Also among the selection is a tequila crafted by Japan’s first tequila maker, allowing you the opportunity to savor an exceptionally rare drink.

If you’re hungry, popular lunch dishes such as Napolitan pasta and taco rice are highly recommended. The Napolitan pasta is a staple of the menu and dates back to before the bar became a sports bar, when it operated as a cafe. The taco rice is a hearty dish made with spicy taco meat and fresh veggies, served over rice and mixed with soft-boiled egg and mayonnaise sauce. Since it’s also open for lunch, many customers come specifically for the food.
Inside, there is counter, table, and sofa seating that offers views of the people coming and going on the street, making it a place you can easily stop by—even on your own. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy watching sports.
